Dec 21, 2006 (newstodate): Today's passenger volumes of Russian airlines have decreased significantly, compared with the Soviet period.
15 years ago more than 130 million passengers were transported annually by Russian carriers, according to EBRD.
Today, this volume has shrunk to less than 20 million passengers, reflecting the increases in rates and the decrease in people's consumption power.
This constitutes the basis of the business plan by Sky Express, Russia's new low-cost operator under formation and supported by EBRD.
Russian and English investors, together with the EBRD, have put in USD35 million for the first 18 months of the project, with another USD35 million to follow in 2008.
The carrier's rates will be about one-tenth of today's price level, and Sky Express foresees 600,000 passengers by the end of the first half of 2007, and 3.5 million by 2008.
For every employee, Aeroflot flies 350 passengers. SkyExpress predicts that when it is fully operational, it will fly over 4,000 passengers per employee.
General Director of SkyExpress is Marina Bukalova, and Rod Brandt has been named CEO.
