Dec 19, 2006 (newstodate): Atlantic Airways is struggling to meet market demands after the demise last weekend of its competitor, FaroeJet.
-So far we have performed performed two extra flights between the Faroe Islands and Denmark with passengers, and one extra flight with air cargo and mail, says Magni Arge, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-We intend to take over FaroeJet's single Avro RJ-100 aircraft as a temporary solution, but so far we have no plans for adding a pure freighter aircraft to our fleet, he says.
Since the start of FaroeJet operations in May, 2006, cargo and mail volumes through the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport have risen significantly.
For this year's first 11 months, the growth in cargo volumes was 29.1 percent to a total of 492.1 tonnes, while air mail shipments declined by 10.9 percent to 395.3 tonnes.
Some Faroese freight forwarders are now airing doubts about the future situation for air cargo considering the decline in uplift capacity after FaroeJet's cease of operations.
