Dec 21, 2006 (newstodate): The EU Commission has invoked safeguard clause against Bulgaria on aviation safety, taking effect from the country's admission to the EU after January 1, 2007.
The decision's main effect is to exclude Bulgarian air carriers from the benefit of being considered a "Community carrier", sustaining their status as "third country operators" operating to and from EU member states in accordance with existing bilateral agreements.
The Bulgarian carriers will have to comply with EU safety rules and might be grounded by member states if found seriously defective during a ramp inspection.
