Dec 1, 2006 (newstodate): The project for a road between Sisimiut on Greenland's east coast to the international airport at Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord has turned another cornerstone.
On November 28, Sisimiut commune decided to promote the set up of a joint state and commune-owned company to take responsibility for all infrastructure projects, and the company has now formulated its business plan.
Included in the business plan is the construction of the road between Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord to provide direct access to trans Atlantic air transport.
Construction of the road will render Sisimiut's heliport superfluous and construction of a new harbour at Sisimiut, also comprised by the business plan, will lead to the closing of Kangerlussuaq harbour, but the over-all net effect from the new infrastructure will be positive, says the plan.
The 170 km road connection would replace the current helicopter and sea transportation between Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq, lifting an estimated 2,374 tonnes of cargo between the two points from sea to road transport, and a further 814 tonnes from helicopter to road, based on figures from 2003.
Formerly a US Air Force Base, Kangerlussuaq Airport is the Atlantic hub for Greenlandair that operates its Airbus A330 on the route to Copenhagen, Denmark, and plans for a new route to the USA from summer 2007.
