Dec 6, 2006 (newstodate): From November 29, 2006, Russian airlines KrasAir and Domodedovo Airlines have suspended flights into Magadan Airport in Russia's northernmost territory.
Traffic will only be resumed when the airport's runway has been upgraded, due to be completed by 2007.
The current runway conditions render operations with Il-96, Boeing 767 and 757 aircraft impossible, leaving the carriers to rely on less fuel-efficient Soviet-built aircraft.
Magadan Airport is seeking a role as a transit and re-fuelling stop on routes between Asia and Europe, and is now actively in the market for foreign investments in its infrastructure.
