Nov 28, 2006 (newstodate): Despite succesful marketing gimmicks by Austrian Airlines, Swedish airline Viking Airlines was the first carrier to offer scheduled direct services between Europe and Iraq.
Since December, 2005, the carrier has operated once-weekly flights from Stockholm to Erbil, in Iraq's Kurdistan province with MD-80 aircraft.
And from November this year, the carrier has added another once-weekly direct flight between Copenhagen Airport and Erbil.
-In early 2007 we are planning to open further destinations in Europe for flights to Erbil, targeting Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt and maybe a fourth city, says Michael Carlsson, Viking Airlines managing director.
The airline is currently mulling plans for increasing its MD-80 aircraft fleet to serve the increasing route network.
Viking Airlines does occasionally carry air cargo on the routes, but in most cases all space on the rather long trips is taken by passengers and luggage.
