Nov 16, 2006 (newstodate): Sweden's Stockholm Arlanda Airport is seeing a sound growth in cargo volumes in 2006.
-I estimate the growth in September, the latest data available, to be some 19 percent above last year, and for the period January-September the increase is around 8.5 percent, year-on,year, says Bjorn Ragnebrink, director air cargo development at Swedish CAA, Luftfartsverket.
As official statistics are still not reliable, Bjorn Ragnebrink has aggregated his latest figures based on figures obtained directly from the airport's operators and handling companies.
This would indicate a total of 6,641 tonnes of cargo in September, and 47,920 tonnes for the nine months period.
Compared to the official statistics available from CAA, this is 48.7 and 34.6 percent, respectively, over CAA figures for the two time periods.
While these two sets of statistics are obviously imcompatible, rendering deductions risky, Stockholm Arlanda is clearly poised for growth spurred also by the introduction from this autumn of freighter services by Cathay Pacific and Korean air Cargo.
If China Airlines Cargo is also on the approach from December, as indicated by Swedish industry sources, Stockholm Arlanda will emerge as a serious contender to Gothenburg Landvetter Airport's current dominating position as Scandinavia's #1 freighter destination with 14 weekly Boeing 747 freighters from the turn or the year, including seven Emirates SkyCargo, five Lufthansa Cargo and two Cargolux rotations.
