Nov 22, 2006 (newstodate): The new freighter traffic at Swedish Jonkoping Airport was officially inaugurated on November 18, and the airport is upbeat about its cargo future.
-Jonkoping Airport is the sixth cargo handling airport in Sweden, but the first LFV-owned airport to provide own cargo handling, says Hazze Sandstrom, Jonkoping airport manager.
-Being a small airport, we build the cargo pallets ourselves. It was no policy from the start, but it does give us full control over the entire process, he says.
-From the start we have two weekly Icelandair Cargo Boeing 757-200F flights with export cargo only, but hopes are to see imports added as well. Also we expect a third flight to be added before the end of this year. Further down the line I am convinced that this is only the start, as more and more operators will detect the potentials of a cargo airport in this most expanding industrial exports region.
The operation from Jonkoping is driven by DSV Air & Sea serving major Swedish exporters in the region.
In 2005 the airport generated a total of 66 tonnes of cargo, and during the first eight months of 2005 totals stood at 34 tonnes. The airport now expects more than 5,000 tonnes of cargo with the two new flights.
