Nov 23, 2006 (newstodate): Plans are maturing for a new airport to be built in Siberia's Irkutsk region.
Decisions have now been made to start the engineering design phase that is to be completed by the end of 2007, followed by a construction period from 2008 till 2010 and final inauguration in 2011.
Among several alternatives, a location near Angarsk, a destination on the Trans-Siberian Railway, has been selected for the new airport that will have one CAT II runway.
Attaining city status only in 1951, Angarsk was founded in 1948 based on the region's oil and petrochemical industries.
