Nov 14, 2006 (newstodate): Plans for a new export airport dedicated to freighter flights from Norway with fresh salmon are still on the table.
Lakselv Banak Airport's negotiations with one specific operator have reached a conclusive stage, but all parties are keen to keep the lid solidly on to protect against any outside interference with the project, well-placed sources say.
Earlier quite advanced plans for a freighter route from Banak to destinations in China and Japan were aborted by Russian denial of overflight rights.
With a 2,800 m runway, Banak Lakselv Airport is located close to major Norwegian salmon production sites in the northern part of the country that will be able to ship salmon exports directly onto the aircraft, avoiding the long and time-consuming trucking to current freighter flights from Oslo Gardermoen Airport.
