Nov 14, 2006 (newstodate): Work is progressing on the construction of a new airport at Lyankyaran, Azerbaijan.
The new airport will accomodate international traffic by passenger and cargo aircraft of all types, and is expected to become operational by next year.
The airport construction is part of the UNESCO-supported project to revive the Silk Road, and besides being soon served by an international airport, Lyankyaran will also be connected to Baku by a new sea route to its new-built harbour.
Participating in the Silk Road project are Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan.
