Nov 9, 2006 (newstodate): Aeroflot has lost the option to buy 22 Boeing 787 Dreamliners as the government did not confirm the acquisition by a decree within the set deadline.
As Boeing's production slots are now taken till 2014, the carrier is left without modern longhaul aircraft to replace the current fleet of Soviet-built aircraft.
Aeroflot earlier stated its intentions to buy also 22 Airbus A350 aircraft that may become available for delivery from 2012, but the deal is still insecure as Airbus has not yet finalised its new, updated version of the A350, nor released it for firm ordering.
The new situation is conflicting with Aeroflot's strategic decision to phase-out all Soviet-built aircraft before 2010.
The carrier has already decided to withdraw all remaining nine IL-86 aircraft from the end of this month, and they are not currently being operated in the new winter program.
