Oct 11, 2006 (newstodate): The airport at Kunashir on the Russian Kuriles Islands has been ordered to shut down operations from this autumn.
The airport has been found lacking in security and safety, certificates and authorisations to sustain passenger traffic.
Instead plans are to build a new all-weather airport to be opened in 2017!
The existing Mendeleyev Airport was built by the Japanese forces during World War II, to serve as a base for Kamikaze operations in the Pacific area.
The airport has been served by the Russian Sakhalin-based airline SAT since 1992.
