Oct 26, 2006 (newstodate): The Russian Ministry of Defence has started work on certification of a re-engined military version of the IL-76 freighter.
The MoD expects to re-engine up to 12 IL-76 aircraft with the new Perm engine by the end of 2010.
In its civilian version, the first re-engined IL-76 aircraft is already in commercial service with Volga-Dnepr, and two re-engined IL-76 aircraft will soon be delivered to Azerbaijan's Silk Way Airlines.
Compared to the "classic" IL-76, the re-engined IL-76 that complies with EU noise abatement standards also saves 17-19 percent on fuel consumption.
