In an effort to compete with Uzbekistan's Tashkent Airport, Kazakhstan will design a plan for strengthening the airport's infrastructure and set up a logistics center at its premises.
Shymkent Airport is currently also used by various NATO airforces as an alternate airport for strikes into Afghanistan.
