Oct 12, 2006 (newstodate): Airbus and Irkut, the Russian aircraft manufacturer, will set up a JV for converting A320 family aircraft close to the D-check deadline into freighters.
The decision follows on the LoI earlier this year between Airbus, EFW (Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH) the EADS' freighter conversion centre of expertise based in Dresden, MIG and Irkut.
The production of up to 30 conversions annually in the initial stage is now set to start by 2010, one year earlier than formerly communicated, and be based at two sites - a plant near Moscow and at Dresden, Germany.
The parties agree that a total of some 400 conversions may be delivered during the period 2010-2025.
