Oct 4, 2006 (newstodate): The start of FastShip cargo operations over the North Atlantic from 2009 may herald significant changes in the market.
-We estimate that we will be carrying approximately one million tonnes annually on our North Atlantic service by the 2012 timeframe. This is under three percent of the projected combined air and ocean freight markets and could include as much as 10-15 percent of the projected total air market as well as a niche-sized slice of the ocean market if you view the air and ocean markets as static, which we dont, says Kate Chambers, FastShip spokeswoman.
-We do not view the markets as a zero sum game, and we are not putting this business together simply to take business away from air freight and ocean freight. History, studies and logic all show that when a revolutionary transportation innovation enters the market, people will change the way they do business, new markets will develop and the market will expand overall. We expect that to happen with FastShip with our radically different service/price point twice as fast as ocean, half the cost of air.
-That said, in the near term we do expect that our market entry will be disruptive to the status quo. We also think there are great opportunities to work together with air freight operators, ocean carriers, freight forwarders, integrators and other industry players.
-We offer something unique and those who participate with us will experience great growth by bringing an entirely new dimension to their customers. They can build a whole new set of time-definite products and can use our service to help optimize their own networks. Those who choose not to participate will not experience that growth, says Ms Chambers.
