Oct 6, 2006 (newstodate): Aeroflot is a strong advocate of consolidation in the Russian airline industry.
This is a main tenet in a paper prepared by Aeroflot for the Far East Economic Forum.
There are currently around 180 airlines in Russia, but five of these account for more than 70 percent of all air transportation volumes, indicting, in Aeroflot's eyes, the need for consolidation.
The point of view is shared by AiRUnion that already consolidates the airline capacity of Omskavia, KrasAir, Sibaviatrans, Samara Airlines, Domodedovo Airlines, and Sakhalinskiye AviaTrassy.
Another setp towards consolidation in the Russian airline industry is an alliance, master-minded by VIM-Avia and also comprising Russian Sky, Tesis and Chernomor Avia as well as Kyrgyz Air reportedly being taken over by VIM-Avia.
