Jan 16, 2006 (newstodate): A tender has now been opened for a project comprising a major modernisation and expansion of Romanian Sibiu/Hermannstadt Airport.
-Included in the tender is planning and construction of a new runway including lighting systems, and a new passenger terminal, says Guido Retter, Sibiu Airport manager.
-The exising 2,000 meter runway will be extended by 1,090 meter, allowing the airport to handle large aircraft and meet CAT II standards.
-A new passenger terminal to process 250 passengers per hour will also be constructed and will be ready for operations by March 2007 already.
-PLanning of both projects will start from February 1, and after three months construction work will start. This is planned to include a temporary suspension of traffic by Q4, 2007, after the peak season, says Mr Retter.
Air cargo will also be targeted at a later stage, and included in the planning work now to start, he says.
