Jan 18, 2006 (newstodate): SAS Ground Services is today offically opening Europe's first infrared de-icing hangar, at Oslo Gardermoen Airport.
In co-operation with Radiant and Oslo Airport, SGS will test a new method of aircraft de-icing, using infrared heat waves to melt the snow and ice building up on aircraft and wing surfaces.
If warranted by the test results, infrared de-icing may reduce the use of chemical glycol by 70 percent.
To collect data and generate experience with the new method, the de-icing hangar will operate as a supplement to ordinary de-icing for the rest of the winter season.
