Jan 4, 2006 (newstodate): From May 15 this summer, Sarajevo will get a new direct twice-weekly air connection to the USA.
Behind the initiative is Atlas Airways, based in Bosnia-Herzegovina, that is basically a cargo airline providing Balkan services.
Atlas Airways is currently seeking an aircraft lease for either an A330, Boeing 767-300, or an Airbus A310 with ETOPS.
-We will operate from Chicago to Sarajevo, serving the ethnic community of some 650,000 people, but as the 2,600 meter runway at Sarajevo Airport will not allow operations with a fully loaded and fuelled wide-body aircraft, we will need a technical landing at either Shannon or Keflavik, says Ned Kujundzic, Atlas Airways general director.
-Since 2004, we have operated a leased Airbus A320 between Frankfurt and Sarajevo twice a week, connecting to Air India's flights between Chicago and Frankfurt, but the costs of inter-European flights make a direct flight commercially viable, he says.
The plannned operation that will be marketed from February 1 will continue until September, to cater to the intense etchnic holiday traffic between the USA and the Balkan region.
