Jan 25, 2006 (newstodate): In 2005, Latvian Riga Airport saw its cargo volumes up by record-high 81.6 percent, to 15,896 tonnes.
To cope with the intense growth, Baltic Cargo Center plans to almost double its existing warehouse facilities to boost the annual cargo handling capacity to 10-11,000 tonnes, and also the Riga-based Latvian forwarding company Spedair is building a new multi-functional cargo terminal to become operative from this summer.
Most of Riga Airport's airfreight is still ex-China shipments destined for and transferred to Russia, with 70 percent of this ex-China freight carried on freighters.
In 2005, the Latvian national carrier, airBaltic, saw its cargo volumes up by 108 percent to 3,712 tonnes, compared to 1,790 tonnes in 2004.
