SEP 13, 2005 (newstodate): According to the Russian Transport Ministry, the country's commercial freighter fleet numbered a grand total of 377 aircraft by January 1, 2005.
This includes 25 AN-124, 128 IL-76, 59 AN-12, 128 AN-26, 29 AN-30 and eight AN-32 aircraft, but excludes the AN-225 that is primarily a military freighter.
Only eight percent of all cargo transported on freighters and passenger aircraft was lifted on new Russian aircraft including belly holds on passenger aircraft IL-96, TU-214 and TU-203.
22 percent of the cargo was flown on western aircraft, mostly leased by Russian airlines, while the bulk, or 70 percent, was lifted by old-generation Russian aircraft.
Most Russian air cargo is delivered by ramp freighters including IL-76 and AN-124. The IL-76 is, however, banned from EU and N American airports as it does not comply to current noise regulations. This aircraft thus now mostly flies to Africa with UN project cargo as well as to China, but even here regulations are increasingly forcing it out of the market.
Faced with the deterioration of the Russian freighter fleet and its lack of competitiveness, the Russian Government has decided to establish the United National Aircraft Construction Company to produce both military and civilian aircraft to renovate the fleet, and to compete with Western aircraft manufacturers.
