SEP 20, 2005 (newstodate): The Norwegian Ministry of Transportation has opened a tender for investigating the future need for a 3rd runway at Oslo Gardermoen Airport within a 25-years perspective.
The purpose of the study is to investigate if and when a 3rd runway might be needed, based on prognosis for the air traffic development including an analysis of operations and aircraft types.
The report must be delivered by February 1, 2006, and the findings will also indicate the need for securing land for future runway construction projects.
During January-August Oslo Gardermoen Airport generated a total of 11.1 mio passenger, up 9.8 percent, while aircraft operations increased by 2.0 percent, y-o-y.
The airport's two runways currently provide a maximum capacity of 72 operations per hour, with the potentials of offering up to 80 flight operations per hour after implementation of various enhancements.
