SEP 19, 2005 (newstodate): A masterplan for the imminent modernisation of Tblisi Airport, Georgia, has been presented, and the airport projects are planned for completion by November 2006.
The Turkish consortium TAV-Urban is now entrusted with the task after the exit of the Turkish Celebi Group, Luxembourg-based GTS, and the U.S. A&J that won the tender in May.
According to the new plans, the existing airport will be closed down and turned into a hotel area, while a new airport will be designed to accomodate 2,000 passengers per hour.
In total, TAV-Urban will spend USD95 million on construction of new airports in Tbilisi and Batumi, with airport management rights for 16 years.
Airport taxes will be introduced to provide incomes from airport operations.
Work on Batumi Airport will start later, and the airport may be relocated to a military airport site, to be decommissioned shortly.
