SEP 05, 2005 (newstodate): Slovenian airport Ljubljana Airport has decided on the implementation of a new 5-10 years business plan including the establishment of the airport as a regional logistics and air cargo hub.
-Our ambition is to become a gateway between W and S/SE Europe, including the Balkan region, by attracting at least one air cargo company, says Brigita Zorec, Ljubljana Airport PR official.
Ms Zorec also confirms that earlier plans for a JV with Slovenian logistics provider Intereuropa never actually materialised, and have now been discarded.
Included in the business plan for the logistics center is also a new air cargo warehouse.
So far air cargo volumes at Ljubljana Airport have dropped as the entry into the EU with the abolition of internal customs procedures has redirected cargo loads from aircraft to trucks, while aircraft types serving the airport have changes from larger aircraft to small regional jets with little cargo capacity.
The airport thus saw cargo volumes down by 12 percent in July.
