SEP 28, 2005 (newstodate): Budapest Airport, currently amidst a tender process aiming at privatisation, has selected a German consortium to undertake a feasibility study for the development of a new passenger terminal.
The contium is led by Lufthansa Consulting and also comprises Koch + Partner architects, LCG partner company Fichtner Airports, act aerodrome consulting team, and the Budapest-based
engineering firm CEH.
Over the past two years, Budapest Ferihegy Airport, which serves the Hungarian capital and almost 99 percent of the country's air traffic
volumes, has experienced a strong traffic boom, mainly driven by the market entrance of several
international and Hungarian-based low-cost carriers that already represent a third of all traffic.
Even after restoring and expanding the old Terminal 1, the airport urgently needs to improve
its facilities and expand terminal and apron space to cope with the expected traffic development.
When the consortium has created detailed
terminal concepts, the LCG consultants will also evaluate the financial viability of the proposed developments.
According to IATA's latest traffic forecast, Hungary is the world's third fastest-growing passenger air transport market.
