SEP 08, 2005 (newstodate): Hungarian low cost carrier WIZZ Air has signed a contract with Airbus for the acquisition of 12 A320 family aircraft, with deliveries to start from summer 2007.
The contract includes a mix of A319 and A320 aircraft, and the carrier has also acquired options for a further 12 A320 afmily aircraft.
WIZZ Air currently operates sic leased A320 aircraft, and the massive fleet expansion will allow the lcc to open up new European routes from its present base airports Budapest in Hungary and Katowice, Warsaw and Gdansk in Poland, as well as new bases in Eastern Europe.
As part of its strategy for Eastern Europe, WIZZ Air this year became the first low cost carrier to operates flights to and from Bulgaria.
Plans are to start operations at Sofia from September 18, with a four times weekly schedule.
