AUG 05, 2005 (newstodate): Taiwan's government has decided to lift its long-standing ban on Taiwanese commercial aircraft flying through Chinese airspace.
It has also agreed to negotiate with Beijing on regular direct charter passenger as well as cargo flights across the Taiwan Strait, and the Chinese side has aired a positive response to this.
The decision to lift the prohibition will allow Taiwanese carriers to apply to the Civil Aviation Administration of China to fly over the airspace of the People's Republic of China.
Use of Chinese airspace would significantly reduce fuel consumption and travel times between Taiwan and destinations in South Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
