AUG 31, 2005 (newstodate): Sofia International Airport is facing a delay in the official inauguration of its new passenger terminal, originally slated for October 31, 2005.
The start of operations will be delayed at least two months, sources say, due to failure of the Austrian company Strabag to complete the work according to schedule.
The airport's new runway seems to be on track with opening by October, and a new ATC system, manufactured by Alenia Marconi, was implemented in February and will expectedly also be relased for operational service by October.
Earlier reports have also cited needs for immediate re-assesment of the airport's security systems to meet today's toughened requirements.
