AUG 03, 2005 (newstodate): The Slovak government has launched a tender to sell 66 percent of the stakes in the airports of Bratislava and Kosice.
August 15 has been set as the date for participants to indicate their interest in either both or a single airport, and initial bids must then be filed by September 5. The privatisation is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
Bratislava Airport, close to its competitor Vienna Airport in Austria, is the biggest of the two, with increasing passenger volumes, 96 percent of which derives from international transport.
Air cargo volumes, on the other hand, are in a sustained decline. In 2004 the airport generated 6,600 tonnes of cargo and 917 tonnes of mail, down by 30 and 46 percent, respectively.
In 2004, Kosice Airport's passenger throughput was up by more than 20 percent over 2003, with scheduled flights now covering about
two-thirds of passenger throughput.
