AUG 18, 2005 (newstodate): Funded by federal budgets, Russian aircraft makers Ilyushin, Tupolev and Yakovlev will jointly design a new aircraft to compete with Boeing and Airbus in the commercial market.
The proposed aircraft will be designed to carry 132-168 passengers over distances of up to 5,000 km, and the manufacturers predict a domestic and international market for 700 aircraft.
Low procurement price, low fuel consumption and low operational costs would be crucial parametres for the succes of the aircraft, the companies say.
If the program succeeds, the certification process whould reportedly be completed by 2012.
