AUG 02, 2005 (newstodate): With ultra-short notice, airlines have been informed that their transfer of air cargo through Beijing Airport will now require a license.
-We received the surprising notice on July 28 that a license must be applied for before July 31 in order to be permitted to transfer cargo shipments through Beijing, says a European airline representative.
-As several airlines protested the lack of proper information, the cut-off date was extended to September 1, but even so the issue is little clarified and airlines seem to be left to individual action, and we have been forced to implement an immediate embargo on transfer shipments through Beijing, he says.
As the Chinese carrier Air China seems to have no problems with transfering shipments destined for other Chinese destinations through Beijing, European airlines tend to see the abruptly introduced requirement as an anti-competitive measure.
