AUG 19, 2005 (newstodate): Conditions for the Ukrainean air cargo industry to expand are restrained by much red tape.
-The Ukrainean customs accepts road feeder services on incoming import shipment only, while all export air cargo must leave on aircraft, says Gunnar Aru, Schenker Ukraine Ltd country manager.
-As traffic by international airlines at Kiev Airport is still rather limited, with only few western airlines serving the destination, this is generally considered a measure to protect the Ukrainean airlines to the detriment of competition.
-Also only airport-to-airport general cargo is marketed at the present stage. We would definitely need to see the introduction of more sophisticated air cargo products to really exploit the potentials for airfreight, he says.
-Other difficulties facing the air cargo industry in Ukraine remains very long transit times, slow terminal proceduresand time-consuming customs clearance procedures.
-Still, the potential for growth and development is here as also demonstrated by the establishement of many global logistics and airfreight companies including DHL, Kuehne & Nagel, Panalpina, and Schenker.
Accoreding to Mr Aru, Schenker Ukraine currently employs 23 staff, with numbers expected to double in the near future, and offices both at Kiev Airport and in the city.
