AUG 15, 2005 (newstodate): Planning for a continued expansion of its aircraft fleet, Air Astana is highly praised by the president of Kazakhstan.
-Some time ago, our domestic Air Kazakhstan airline was a shame for our country. It was purchased first by Kazkommertsbank, then by Halyk Bank, as a result, it reached the end of the line so that our aircrafts were being arrested abroad. Foreign companies refused to aviate them, says Nursultan Nazarbaev, president of Kazakhstan.
-Then I persuaded the British company BAE Systems, engaged in space defense, to come to us. The company was established during three years with English participation, and Air Astana is among the best in the CIS. Our aircraft now land in the best airports worldwide, he says.
Established in 2001 and now owned 51 percent by the Kazakhstan government and 49 percent by British BAE Systems, Air Astana is the largest airline in Kazakhstan.
The carrier now operates 21 international and 17 domestic routes with a fleet of 11 aircraft, including three Boeing 737-700/800, three Boeing 757-200, and five Fokker F50 aircraft.
