AUG 26, 2005 (newstodate): From September 5, airBaltic brings domestic flights back to Latvia.
The carrier's first domestic route connects Riga and Liepaja with four weekly, 40-minutes flights using Fokker F50 aircraft.
During the Soviet period, there were flights from Riga to the Latvian towns of Liepaja, Ventspils, Daugapils, Rezekne and Preili. From Liepaja and Ventspils, flights were available to Moscow and Leningrad, now St Petersburg. The flights were halted in the 1980s, and regular scheduled domestic flights have not been available in Latvia since then.
Earlier this year, Liepaja, 210 km west of Riga, applied for EU support for a project to upgrade its technical facilities.
The project, estimated to cost some 5.6 million euro and to be completed by 2007, will comprise upgrading and resurfacing of the 2,002 meter long runway, and installation of a new ligting system.
The airport, originally built for military purpose, was transferred to civil authority in 1960 and is now part of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone.
