AUG 05, 2005 (newstodate): During the last few months, data-link implementation has made fast progress in European aviation.
New developments include a doubling in the number of aircraft committed for controller-pilot data-link communications from 152 to over 300 aircraft, an increase in the number of companies conducting CPDLC operations, and the decision to implement Link 2000+ services in UK airspace from 2011.
Alitalia has decided to equip their European fleet for CPDLC operations, and Air Europa has announced more orders for Boeing aircraft fitted for CPDLC ex factory.
Air Europa has also gained operational approval for CPDLC operations. The carrier now operates five B737-800 over VDL Mode 2/ATN, and by the end of this year this will extend to a total of 10 aircraft, while nine more B737-800 delivered in 2006 will also be data-Link fitted on delivery from Boeing.
In April, Fedex obtained operational approval to conduct CPDLC operations in the European airspace, and Fedex European's 15 A310 will be converted as part of their normal maintenance schedule.
Air Berlin, operating Boeing 737-800, and ATI, operating Airbus A300-600ST Beluga, also joined CPDLC live operations over Maastricht UAC airspace.
