AUG 04, 2005 (newstodate): As of January 1, 2005, the FAA requirement for all large passenger aircraft to have fire detection and suppression systems installed in cargo compartments was implemented by about 74 percent of the world's fleet.
The rule came into force by March 19, 2001 and affects about 3,700 aircraft currently in use, and is mandatory on all new production aircraft.
