JUL 08, 2005 (newstodate): Airline consolidation in Russia is expected to reduce the number of airlines from today's 200 to around 25 within only few years.
Among the currently 200 airlines, the top-four operate some 250 aircraft and holds a 50 percent share of the market.
In the larger top-30 segment, operators fly some 500 aircraft and hold about 90 percent of the market.
The remaining 270 Russian airlines thus serve less than 10 percent of the market.
The continuing airline consolidation from 200 to eventually some 25 airlines is thus impeding to improve financial strenght and capital basis for the industry, says a recent GECAS analysis, presented at the 3rd Annual Russia and CIS Airfinance Conference in Moscow on June 21.
Latest estimates by the Russian transport ministry indicate a growth in the volume of domestic air passenger transportation by five to seven times by 2010, reaching between three and four million passengers.
