JUL 07, 2005 (newstodate): A tender has been openede by Keflavik Airport for expansion of its terminal facilities.
-The current terminal was opened in the 80'ies with a planned capacity of one million passengers per year. The actual volume is now 1.8 million, says Stefan Jonsson, Keflavik Airport.
-This figure, however, includes a large proportion of transfer passengers as Icelandair huses Keflavik as its hub for European/North American traffic. Still, the existing terminals are clearly not able to cope with the current traffic volumes and growth, he says.
-After the expansion the airport will be able to handle 3.1 million passengers till 2015, which is in line with the existing forecast for the period.
After the conclusion of the tender work will start by September, 2005, and the expanded terminal will be operative from January 1, 2007.
