JUN 15, 2005 (newstodate): Sukhoi seems confident of winning the battle for an Aeroflot order for 50 regional jets although no formal contract has been signed yet.
Sukhoi's RRJ that has already landed orders for another 50 RRJs from Siberia Airlines, also has high hopes to end the year with up to 200 RRJ orders, pending the outcome of current negotiations with a few other potential customers.
The RRJ is developed in cooperation with Boeing and enjoys full governmental support in contrast to its Russian competitors, the TU-334 and the AN-148.
If Aeroflot eventually decides in favour of a Russian aircraft over competing Western-built alternatives it will mean a significant boost to revive Russia's declining civil aircraft industry.
