JUN 20, 2005 (newstodate): The action by airfreight forwarders in Italy, Belgium and Switzerland to force airlines to start talks on remuneration for services relating to collection of surcharges is gaining widespread support.
The action, supported by FIATA, calls for airlines to respond before July 1.
Other countries are increasingly taking action on a local basis.
-After learning of the action we decided to write our counterpart, the Board of Airline Representatives in Denmark, to open a similar dialogue and have requested a response by July 1 as well although we accept the fact the the forthcoming holiday season makes it difficult to speed up the process, says Henrik Dam, Danish Airfreight Forwarders Association chairman, and Aaen Transport director.
-Furthermore I also expect that the airlines will have to remit the issue back to their respective headquarters for instruction. But there should be no doubt: we also see freight forwarders caught in a position where we are shouldering responsibility, liabilites and financial obligations to collect surcharges and other duties without any remuneration and compensation. This is clearly not tolerable, he says.
The Finnish airfreight forwarders' organisation has also launched a similar campaign, and more countries are probably in the process of following suit.
