JUN 24, 2005 (newstodate): Austrian Airlines has phased out its last MD-80 family aircraft, ending an era spanning 25 years.
In 1978 Austrian Airlines and Swissair were the first airlines to order the MD-80 and to start operating it in October 1980.
The last remaining MD-83 was eventually withdrawn from service on 22 June 2005. Within almost 25 years, Austrian Airlines flew a total of 20 aircraft of the versions MD-81, MD-82, MD-83 and MD-87.
The MD-80 logged a total of 900,000 flight hours and 575,000 flights with Austrian Airlines, transporting some 35 million passengers and 280,000 tons of cargo without any accident.
