JUN 29, 2005 (newstodate): Freighter operator AirRep has decided to base one IL-76 freighter in Johannesburg.
AirRep will cooperate with charter broker Adagold Aviation that intends to market the capacity in South Africa and other African countries, and is optimistic that it will soon attract enough business for a second aircraft.
The IL-76 is already operating a substantial two-year charter contract, but this leaves regular vacant windows during which the aircraft is available for charter on the open market.
Adagold Aviation and AirRep are also eyeing potential regional feeder work for scheduled airlines in their plans for the IL-76.
-A number of African carriers are trying to build up their regional feeder networks for cargo, but their narrow-body regional fleets have virtually no cargo capacity, says Andy Lewis, AirRep managing director.
-Maintained and operated to the standards that scheduled carriers demand, our IL-76 has a 40-tonne capacity, good volume and is well-suited to the tough terrain outside the major hubs, he says.
