MAY 25, 2005 (newstodate): Among the Lithuanian bidders in the tender for Lithuanian Airlines is Arijus - the forwarding and logistics company that last year won the tender for Air Lithuania.
-Our main idea for participating in this tender for Lithuanian Airlines is to envisage its merger with Air Lithuania, which would create one significant Lithuanian airline in its home market, says Armis Valiulis, Arijus general manager.
-As members of the EU, Lithuania's airspace has been opened as well to the full competition of new entrants, including low cost carriers, and any Lithuanian airline would require a considerable critical mass to stand against this development, he says.
-Merging the two Lithuanian airlines could lead to significant cost-savings and lay the foundation for a rapid expansion even in the face of a strong competition on prices.
-Other bidders may have different plans for Lithuanian Airlines if they prevail and win the tender. I am afraid that what will count eventually is who offers the largest price for the airline, and we might be beaten on this single issue, says Mr Valiulis.
