MAY 30, 2005 (newstodate): Problems with statistical evidence at Stockholm Arlanda have still not been solved.
-While criticism has been directed against the handling companies' inability to provide figures on cargo volumes handled, the problem may rather lie in the inadequacy of the reporting systems themselves, says Karsten Bjarbo, LFV Stockholm Arlanda cargo manager.
-We are, therefore, working hard to adjust and enhance these systems, but we will probably need another month or two to be able to finally come up with a system to provide totally reliable statistics.
According to the official statistics on air cargo at Stockholm Arlanda in 2004, the through-put was 75,610 tonnes, down 27.8 percent on the preceding year.
-This is, in my opinion, a gross underestimate, says Mr Bjarbo.
-My own estimate for 2004 is closer to 130-140,000 tonnes of flown cargo, in addition to some 235,000 tonnes of trucked cargo, he says.
Considering the scope of the on-going construction of new air cargo terminals at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, the lack of reliable cargo statistics is obviously a problem for marketing the airport among new potential airline customers.
