MAY 27, 2005 (newstodate): On May 17, work started on the construction of a new cargo terminal at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
The new complex, situated in the airport's new cargo area Cargo City, is designed for use by Swedish Post and FedEx.
The terminal will be built in two steps, with the first phase comprising 9,000 sq.m. to become operational by the end of June, 2006.
-We are also negotiating with SAS Spirit Cargo Sweden concerning a move from their current terminal on the eastern parametres of the airport to Cargo City, says Karsten Bjarbo, LFV Stockholm Arlanda cargo manager.
The long drawn-out decision is now expected "within the very near future", and plans are ready for construction of a new 20-25,000 sq.m. terminal for the purpose.
This would also provide office areas for freight forwarders and a new Border Inspection Post.
The cargo terminals at Stockholm Arlanda will be financed and managed by NAP, Nordic Airport Properties, a joint venture between Swedish LFV and Airis.
The vision is for the new Stockholm Arlanda Cargo City to be fully operational by 2012, comprising three cargo terminals with a total of 160,000 sq.m. floor space at a total investment of one billion Swedish Kroner.
