MAY 10, 2005 (newstodate): The start of the reconstruction and modernisation project at Sofia Airport has once again been stalled, this time by the enforcement of strenthened EU security demands.
The new demands, driven by the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the USA, render earlier decisions on providers and suppliers through the tender process obsolete, sources say.
The Bulgarian ministry must now open a new tender to seek bidders complying with the current standards, and this will probably delay the start-up of the process till next spring.
The projects at Sofia Airport include a new terminal, as well as runway and infrastructure projects.
