MAY 13, 2005 (newstodate): Martinair has no specific information about the implications on its future from the acquisition by the Danish AP Moller Group of the Dutch P&O Nedlloyd.
-Frankly speaking we were quite surprised by the news, as I suspect everyone was, says Erik van Doeselaar, Martinair press spokesman.
-We still have no specific information on the deal, but I expect the process for shareholders to agree to the proposal will take about one month. After that we will know more, he says.
-I would not, however, envisage major changes in any case as Maersk Air and Martinair do business in entirely different segments. But let us not rule out the possibility that the future might produce new opportunities to the benefit of both parties, he says.
Martinair currently operates a freighter fleet comprising four Boeing 747-200 aircraft dedicated to serving the Far Eastern markets, and seven MD-11 freighters dedicated to the African and American markets.
The airline will take in its first converted Boeing 747-400 freighter by the end of 2006, and plans eventually to fully replace the -200 aircraft with -400 conversions as the coveted conversion slots are secured.
