MAY 03, 2005 (newstodate): Lithuanian Airlines, poised for privatisation by direct sales after two aborted tenders, emerged from 2004 in good shape.
Despite increased competition Lithuanian Airlines retained a strong position in the market with a 45.7 percent share of the scheduled passenger traffic at Vilnius International Airport.
The carrier introduced a new service line, training of third party maintenance specialists, and sold three out of four of its subsidiaries in an effort to strengthen its focus on core activities ahead of a sale.
During 2004 Lithuanian Airlines started scheduled operations to Dublin and Milan, restored flights to Paris and increased the number of frequencies to Amsterdam, Brussels, Helsinki, Copenhagen, London and Moscow.
SAS is known to have announced its interest in taking over the carrier, but on Friday came the announcement of the formation of a consortium comprising three Lithuanian companies that aim at bidding for 100 percent of the stake in the airline.
The consortium pledges to make Lithuanian Airlines the biggest carrier in the Baltic region within the next few years.
